Stasis Altered

We, like the organisms around us, are fighting for survival. We are informed by generations of adaptations and transformations. We are set on guaranteeing our own survival. My work focuses on the defense mechanisms of insects and reptiles. Within those defensive behaviors, there are parallels with humans and their propensity to put up protective barriers that aid in the survival of our species. Like many, I hide behind behaviors that allow me to avoid being vulnerable, and I camouflage my emotions to prevent exposure to further grief and pain.

The act of making is transformative. Through my printmaking process, the paper is altered with ink and pressure, then further manipulated into angles and shadow.

Insects and reptiles use spines, caustic acids, aposematic coloration, and mimicry to protect themselves from predation. I provide what I want others to see, and omit what I feel is dangerous for me to reveal. As I explore my own vulnerabilities, this process is in the end, cathartic.

These pinwheels were inspired by the aposematic coloration of the non-venomous Regal Ringneck Snake. They were installed in multiple locations and configurations throughout Fall 2021. Each pinwheel was created with a combo of gradient Screenprinting, Relief Woodcut, India ink, Bristol Smooth Paper, and Mulberry Paper.
